What are my options for dental sedation?

Nitrous Oxide — Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is an odorless gas that is administered through a small nasal mask throughout the treatment. It works quickly and wears off shortly after the procedure, allowing you to resume normal activities the same day. It’s especially helpful for patients with dental anxiety or sensitive gag reflexes.

Oral Conscious Sedation — Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before your appointment to help you feel calm and comfortable. It provides a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide while keeping you awake and responsive. This sedation option is ideal for longer procedures or for patients with significant anxiety or complex dental needs.

Are there any side effects with nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation?

Side effects that accompany dental sedation are typically mild and dissipate quickly. Nitrous oxide often does not come with noticeable side effects, but some patients may experience slight nausea, headache, or dizziness. Oral conscious sedation may cause drowsiness, dry mouth, or mild amnesia of the procedure. These effects typically fade within a few hours. Our team will review your medical history to minimize risks and ensure a smooth, stress-free experience.

Can I drive myself home after receiving nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation?

After receiving nitrous oxide, patients can typically drive themselves home since its effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed. However, patients are always welcome to wait in our lobby until they feel completely comfortable getting behind the wheel. If you receive oral conscious sedation during your visit, you will need someone to wait in our lobby and drive you home. The medication can make patients drowsy and impair coordination and decision-making for several hours post-treatment.
